The Most Important TTRPG Crowdfunding Platforms

Kickstarter and BackerKit are now two of the most important crowdfunding platforms for tabletop roleplaying games. Both can successfully fund RPG rulebooks, adventures, campaign settings, supplements, accessories, and other tabletop projects. Both support pre-launch audience building, crowdfunding campaigns, reward tiers, post-campaign pledges, and fulfillment workflows. But they are not identical.

Kickstarter offers the larger, more established crowdfunding ecosystem and broad consumer recognition.

BackerKit offers a particularly deep set of crowdfunding, pre-launch, audience-building, and fulfillment tools—and has increasingly focused on TTRPG publishers.

For most backers, the better platform is simply the one hosting the better project.

For publishers, the decision is more complicated.

This guide compares Kickstarter vs BackerKit specifically for TTRPG crowdfunding, including discovery, pre-launch tools, fees, pledge management, digital rewards, fulfillment, and the experience for backers. Kickstarter vs BackerKit for TTRPGs:

The Short Answer

Kickstarter may have the advantage if:

• broad crowdfunding discovery is especially important
• your audience is already familiar with Kickstarter
• you want access to Kickstarter's established tabletop audience
• reducing friction for people who already have Kickstarter accounts matters
• you want crowdfunding and pledge management within the Kickstarter ecosystem

BackerKit may have the advantage if:

• you already have an audience you can bring to the campaign
• pre-launch audience development is a major part of your strategy
• you want detailed tools for tracking followers and conversions
• reservations and other pre-launch incentives matter
• you want integrated crowdfunding and pledge management
• you publish digital TTRPG products through DriveThruRPG
• you expect to run multiple campaigns and build a repeat crowdfunding audience

Neither platform automatically makes a campaign better.

The quality of the product, strength of the offer, size and engagement of the audience, campaign presentation, creator credibility, and fulfillment plan matter more than the logo at the top of the page.



Kickstarter for TTRPG Crowdfunding

Kickstarter has been associated with tabletop crowdfunding for years and remains home to RPG campaigns ranging from small independent releases to major licensed games.

In 2026, Kickstarter also added a dedicated TTRPG discovery subcategory, making tabletop roleplaying projects easier for interested backers to find through its discovery tools. That established ecosystem is Kickstarter's biggest strategic advantage.

A prospective backer may already:

• have a Kickstarter account
• follow other RPG creators there
• receive Kickstarter recommendations
• browse tabletop projects
• have backed previous campaigns
• understand how Kickstarter pledges work

Every piece of existing familiarity removes a little friction.

Kickstarter also uses all-or-nothing funding: if the project does not reach its funding goal, pledges are not collected. For many backers, that provides a useful first layer of protection against campaigns that fail to generate enough initial support to proceed.

However, successfully reaching a funding goal does not guarantee successful production or fulfillment. Backers should still evaluate the creator and project itself. BackerKit for TTRPG Crowdfunding

BackerKit originally became widely known as a pledge-management service used after crowdfunding campaigns on other platforms. It is now a full crowdfunding platform in its own right.

More importantly for RPG publishers, BackerKit has been investing directly in the TTRPG category. Its current TTRPG platform includes crowdfunding, pre-launch pages, audience analytics, pledge management, community tools, reservations, digital incentives, and other campaign infrastructure. BackerKit reports substantial growth in RPG projects on its platform over the last several years, although those performance claims come from BackerKit itself and should be treated as platform marketing rather than independent comparative research.

For TTRPG publishers specifically, one of BackerKit's most interesting recent additions is its DriveThruRPG integration.

Publishers can connect eligible DriveThruRPG titles to BackerKit so digital rewards can be delivered directly into a backer's DriveThruRPG library. BackerKit introduced this crowdfunding integration in 2026. That is unusually well aligned with the way many independent RPG publishers already distribute digital products.



Kickstarter vs BackerKit: Pre-Launch Tools

Crowdfunding increasingly begins long before the campaign itself goes live.

Both Kickstarter and BackerKit allow creators to build interest before launch, but BackerKit currently offers a particularly extensive pre-launch toolset.

BackerKit pre-launch pages can collect followers and provide creators with information about how visitors move through the audience funnel. Its tools can track stages such as visitors becoming followers and followers becoming backers.

BackerKit also offers Pre-launch Reservations. A creator can allow interested followers to pay a small reservation fee in exchange for eligibility for a special perk when they later pledge. The reservation itself is not the final pledge; the supporter still needs to back the campaign after launch. As of September 2026, BackerKit's documentation describes the feature as requiring activation by its team.

This creates three different levels of pre-launch audience intent:

Follower → Reservation → Backer

That can give publishers more information than follower count alone.

Kickstarter also supports pre-launch project pages and followers, and those followers can receive notification when a project launches.

For a creator primarily concerned with measuring and activating an audience before launch, however, BackerKit currently provides more specialized tools.

Kickstarter vs BackerKit: Discovery

This is where Kickstarter retains an important structural advantage.

Kickstarter has a long-established general crowdfunding marketplace covering games, publishing, technology, film, art, design, and many other categories.

TTRPGs also now have their own discovery subcategory. That means a project can potentially be discovered by people who did not arrive through the creator's own email list, social channels, advertising, or website.

BackerKit also has platform discovery, upcoming-project listings, recommendation systems, and an established backer community. Its pre-launch projects can appear in BackerKit's Coming Soon area and within personalized upcoming-project discovery.

But platform discovery should never be mistaken for an audience acquisition plan. On either platform, publishers should assume that much of their early momentum must be generated before launch. A crowdfunding platform can amplify demand. It cannot manufacture strong demand for a project that enters launch day without an audience.

Kickstarter vs BackerKit Fees

At the basic crowdfunding-platform level, the headline fee structure is similar.

Kickstarter

For successfully funded projects, Kickstarter currently charges:

• 5% platform fee plus payment processing fees, generally around 3%–5% depending on transaction and location.
• For U.S. pledges, Kickstarter lists standard processing at 3% + $0.30 per pledge, with different micropledge pricing for smaller pledges. If the project does not reach its goal, Kickstarter does not collect its platform fee.

BackerKit

BackerKit currently lists:

• 5% platform fee plus 2.9% + $0.30 per pledge in U.S. payment processing for crowdfunding campaigns.
• Its integrated pledge manager has a separate fee structure for additional transactions collected after the campaign.

Exact fees can change and may differ by country, transaction type, pledge manager usage, or additional services. For most TTRPG campaigns, the platform fee difference is unlikely to be the single most important factor. A campaign that converts substantially better on one platform can easily overcome a relatively small difference in transaction costs.

Kickstarter vs BackerKit Pledge Management

Historically, one major difference between the platforms was simple: A Kickstarter campaign would often finish on Kickstarter and then move into BackerKit or another external pledge manager. That distinction has changed.

Kickstarter now has its own native pledge manager.

It supports features including:

• surveys
• reward upgrades
• add-ons
• post-campaign pledges
• shipping charges
• tax collection
• backer and order management
• address management
• fulfillment exports

Kickstarter describes its pledge manager as included without an additional upfront fee, although payment and other applicable transaction fees can still apply to funds collected.

BackerKit's pledge manager remains one of its core products and is integrated directly with campaigns launched on BackerKit.

So the old advice that “Kickstarter requires an external pledge manager while BackerKit has one built in” is no longer accurate.

Both platforms now provide native post-campaign management. Creators running Kickstarter campaigns can also still choose to use BackerKit or another third-party system instead.

Which Is Better for Digital TTRPG Rewards?

For publishers already selling through DriveThruRPG, BackerKit currently has a particularly interesting advantage. Its DriveThruRPG integration can automatically place eligible digital rewards into a backer's DriveThruRPG library.

That can eliminate:

• manually distributed download links
• batches of individual coupon codes
• spreadsheet-driven delivery
• separate file-hosting workflows

Updates made to the title through DriveThruRPG can also remain connected to the customer's library.

Kickstarter can distribute digital rewards through its campaign and pledge-management tools, but the direct DriveThruRPG connection makes BackerKit especially relevant for established RPG publishers whose catalog already lives there.

Which Platform Is Better for TTRPG Backers?

From a backer's perspective, platform choice should usually be secondary.

Ask:

• Is the product something I actually want?
• Does the campaign clearly explain what I receive?
• Has the creator successfully produced similar work?
• How much of the project is already complete?
• Are delivery estimates credible?
• Are shipping, taxes, tariffs, and other costs explained clearly?
• Does the creator communicate risks honestly?

A professionally run BackerKit campaign can be safer than a poorly planned Kickstarter campaign.

Which Platform Is Better for TTRPG Publishers?

There is no universal answer, but the strategic differences are becoming clearer.

Kickstarter is especially compelling when:

• You want access to a mature crowdfunding ecosystem and broad marketplace discovery.
• You expect many potential customers to already understand and use Kickstarter.
• Your project may benefit from reaching tabletop backers outside your existing audience.
• You prefer to keep campaign and post-campaign management within Kickstarter's ecosystem.

BackerKit is especially compelling when:

• You already control meaningful audience channels such as an email list, customer base, previous backers, or community.
• You want deeper pre-launch audience measurement and activation.
• Pre-launch reservations fit your campaign strategy.
• You run repeated crowdfunding campaigns and care about tracking audience behavior across them.
• You want crowdfunding and pledge management tightly integrated.
• You already distribute TTRPG products through DriveThruRPG.

Neither list should be treated as a formula. The best platform is the one whose audience and tools fit the economics of the particular campaign.

What About Gamefound?

Gamefound is another legitimate tabletop crowdfunding platform and supports tabletop roleplaying projects. It is particularly well established around board games and other tabletop products. For TTRPGs specifically, however, Kickstarter and BackerKit currently have substantially more visible publisher adoption, which is why they are the focus of this comparison. Gamefound should still be considered when its audience and campaign tools fit a particular project.
